Exposure and Response Prevention
ERP Therapy in Oak Brook
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a structured, evidence-based approach often used to address obsessive-compulsive behaviors and related patterns. This page offers an educational overview of how ERP is understood and used at Oak Brook Counseling & Wellness by Jeffery Siddall, MA, NCC, LPC.
What Exposure and Response Prevention is
ERP is a behavioral approach in which a person gradually faces situations that bring up obsessive thoughts while choosing not to carry out the compulsive response that usually follows. Over time and with practice, the aim is for the thoughts to carry less force and the urge to respond to fade.
It is collaborative and paced. You and your counselor decide together what to approach first, how quickly to move, and how to build on each step. ERP is not about rushing through discomfort; it is about building capacity at a workable pace.
Who may explore ERP
ERP is commonly associated with obsessive-compulsive behaviors and related patterns. People who notice recurring intrusive thoughts and repetitive responses they feel driven to carry out may explore whether this approach fits their situation.
A consultation can help clarify whether ERP is appropriate for what you are experiencing without assigning a diagnosis online or promising a result. Your care is shaped by your goals and your readiness.
What sessions may involve
Early sessions typically focus on understanding your experience, building a shared picture of the thoughts and responses involved, and learning coping skills. From there, your counselor helps you approach situations in a planned, gradual way and practice choosing a different response.
Homework between sessions is often part of ERP, because practice in everyday life is where much of the work happens. The pace is set with your clinician and adjusted as you go.
How treatment planning is individualized
There is no single ERP plan. Your clinician considers what you want to address, what you have tried before, and how quickly you feel able to move. Steps are introduced gradually and revisited as your confidence and goals shift.
If ERP turns out not to be the right fit, your clinician can help you consider other approaches or a different path to support.
